Tech talk: Hashtag named as kids' word of the year
Language is constantly changing, particularly among younger generations. Oxford University Press has declared "hashtag" 2015’s Children's Word of the Year.
, and as part of the broadcaster’s 500 Words competition, more than 120,000 short stories by children aged between 5- to 13-years-old were analysed.
The report revealed that the use of the hashtag symbol to add an extra meaning or comment at the end of a sentence has become commonplace. Tech words such as Instagram, Snapchat and emoji all rose up the ranks, while email, mobile and Facebook seem to be in decline.
Vineeta Gupta at the Oxford University Press said children have extended the use of hashtags from a simple prefix, or as a search term for Twitter, to an editorial device that adds drama or comment.
