The conference centre, owned by Harrogate Borough Council, has already cut 39 posts since July, and faces projected losses of £2m in the next two years.

A spokesperson for HIC told Event that a consultation process on the potential redundancies is set to finish early in the new year, and that the cuts will have no negative effect on the number of events the venue will be able to host, post-expansion.

HIC director Angus Houston said the measures will allow the venue to "focus on its core business".

"This may mean changes to the structure of the team and its staffing levels," he said.

The venue is the largest conference and exhibition centre in the north of England. , the expansion project has increased HIC’s exhibition space by 20 per cent.

Houston said the centre generated £180m for the local economy last year by attracting delegates to Harrogate.

He added: "The completion of the new halls represent investment for the long-term future of Harrogate and HIC, providing additional spaces that will allow us to grow and meet the ever-changing needs of event organisers."
