Hachette increases frequency of ElleGirl to bi-monthly

LONDON - Hachette Filipacchi is stepping up the frequency of its teenage Elle spin-off as ElleGirl goes bi-monthly, upping the competition with rivals including CosmoGirl.

ElleGirl, currently published quarterly, goes bi-monthly from its next issue, which goes on sale July 29.

Hachette Filipacchi already owns the leading teenage lifestyle magazine, Sugar, which has an ABC circulation of 321,258. ElleGirl has yet to have an ABC audit, and is aimed at a reader slightly older than rival teen magazines such as Cosmopolitan spin-off CosmoGirl, Bliss and J-17.

Hachette-Filipacchi says that ElleGirl has been successful in creating a new market -- aspirational older teenage girls interested in style.

Lysanne Currie, head of publishing for Hachette Filipacchi UK's teen group, said: "ElleGirl offers something distinct and stylish for the independent and inquisitive teenager. Demand is growing and this move will help ensure our long-term position as market leader in this exclusive and sought-after sector."

The magazine was launched in April 2001, when Elle was still published as a joint venture with Emap. Hachette took full control of the titles, along with Red magazine, last year when the French publisher launched its own UK subsidiary.

The launch of ElleGirl joined another spin-off from the Elle family, Elle Decoration. In the UK, Hachette also publishes B, TV Hits and All About Soap, which it acquired when it bought Attic Futura.

Kevin Hand, chairman of Hachette Filipacchi UK, said: "It has always been our intention, from the moment we took sole control of the UK Elle brands last autumn, to fully develop the ElleGirl title. This is the right time to begin that process. Under the stewardship and direction of Hachette Filipacchi UK, it will continue to expand along with the rest of our portfolio."
