Guardian maintains lead in ABCes as Telegraph momentum continues

LONDON - Guardian.co.uk maintained its position as the UK's most popular national newspaper site in May, despite a slight fall in unique users, while rival Telegraph.co.uk jumped 5.75%, buoyed by its coverage of the MPs expenses scandal, according to the latest ABCe figures.

attracted 27.2m uniques, down 0.47% month on month. However, its UK users rose from 9.7m in April to 9.94m in May.

Edward Roussel, digital editor at Telgraph Media Group, said: "Our MPs' expenses coverage brought new audiences to our website, helping to extend the Telegraph brand in the UK and across the world."

MailOnline, which includes the and sites, also had a strong month, increasing its unique users by 6.41% month on month to 24.6m, placing it in third position. The site's UK users jumped by over 1m, from 6.95m in April to 7.97m in May.

  overtook its News International stablemate Times Online to take fourth position with an 11.57% increase in unique users to 22.95m. Its UK users also jumped by over 1m, from 7.4m in April to 8.46m in May.

suffered a 5.46% monthly decline in uniques, dropping it into fifth position with 20.41m users. Its UK users also dropped from 7.55m in April to 7.47m in May.

posted a large decline in unique users, dropping by 8.23% month on month to 9.57m. Its UK users went from 4.11m in April to 3.68m in May.

Mirror Group, spanning , and , increased its unique users by 1.1% month on month to 8.69m. Its UK users also increased from 3.88m in April to 4.49m in May.

David Black, Trinity Mirror's Group director of digital publishing, said: "The consistent month-on-month growth of Mirror Group's websites every month this year shows the success of our strategy of developing a loyal and engaged audience focused on the UK."
