Google set to extend advertising programme with display option

NEW YORK - Google is extending its AdSense programme to include display advertising for the first time, along with its pay-per-click service.

The AdSense programme currently allows website owners to place ads on their sites from Google based on relevant search terms, with advertisers paying for every click through.

According to a reports, the new model will introduce the "cost-per-mille" format, where advertisers pay for every thousand people that see their ad.

Another innovation is that the ads will allow for animation, unlike the text-only format for the Google AdSense programme.

The developments are part of a number of changes in the way Google sells advertising, which are designed to give advertisers more control over where the ads appear and how they are priced.

Last week, Google revealed that revenues from its AdSense programme rose by 75% during the first quarter of the year, bringing in $584m (£305m) for the company.
