The move comes as Yahoo! upped its free email storage to 1GB, matching that offered by Gmail since it launched a year ago.
In a message to Gmail users, Google said that storage is an important part of email, and that users should not have to worry about it.
"To celebrate our one-year birthday, we're giving everyone one more gigabyte. But why stop the party there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able," Google said.
Google has also improved the Gmail service by enabling people to send emails that have been rich-text formatted. Previously, the service used only plain text.
Email is increasingly been seen by the major ISPs as a vital tool in the fight for customer loyalty and bringing search traffic as revenues for paid-for search terms grow.
Separately, Google was in on the April Fool's day action this year with a link on its taking users to the -- promoting a "smart" drink that makes you more intelligent and less thirsty.
The catch is that to get some Gulp, you have to know someone who has been "gulped". But Google assures visitors: "If you don't know anyone who can give you one, don't worry -- that just means you aren't cool. But very, very (very!) soon, you will be."
