Google releases new search tools

LONDON - Google has unveiled a number of sophisticated search products allowing for customisable search results, which can now be trimmed down to include only the most recent results or those from the past 24 hours.

The product increases immediacy to Google search as it takes on Twitter to capitalise on the growing demand for "real-time" results.

Starting today, when performing a basic Google search a "Show Options" tab will appear on the results page, which allows users to customise their queries to include more videos, images, forum results, reviews or a historical timeline and related items.

Google said the search options would be helpful for searches that are hard to express with keywords, such as "Show me discussions about the Oscars in forums" or to explore topics more broadly or refine them, for example, "Show me queries that typically branch out from renewable energy'".

Google previewed another feature that allows search results to link up and display on users' mobile phones when they log on to the website from their hand set.

The products were released at Google's Searchology press event yesterday. Juergen Galler, director of product management at Google, said: "We're always thinking about what we can do to improve the search experience, and we think this launch is a good step to help users get quickly and easily to precisely the kind of information they seek."

Google also previewed Google Squared, to be released by the end of the move, hinted as one of Google's more ambitious products.

In Google Squared, search results would show up in a spreadsheet format rather than a typical top-to-bottom links page, with an emphasis on pure information rather than just related content.
