Google's QSB was announced in January, but was only officially rolled out today for Mac desktops. The application lets users search their Macs and the internet in the same window, much like the Finder application but with web components, or Microsoft's Quicksilver for Windows desktops.
The application can also be used to launch software, for example the calculator tool or calendars.
Blog TechCrunch noted that the application can also be used to update , suggesting that Google has plans to further integrate its services with the popular microblogging website.
Eric Schmidt, Google chief executive, hinted in May that the two companies would likely work together in the future, but ruled out plans for an acquisition. He also hinted at further developments in the real-time market.
recently announced its Google Wave product, which allows users of its Gmail email product to work in real-time.
Ryan Tabone and Karen Grunberg, Google product managers, said on the Google Mac blog: "Google Quick Search Box is extensible. This means that anyone can create a plug-in that enables the QSB to search over additional data or perform more actions on results.
"As an example, we really enjoy the Twitter plug-in . After enabling that bad boy, we can send tweets right from the QSB and then do a Google search right after."
