LONDON - Google is to run TV ads for the first time to promote its browser Chrome with the aim of eroding Microsoft's dominant position.

The search engine is preparing to roll out ads in the US via its Google TV ads system. This follows Google developing a series of and the benefits it can offer over rival browsers.

This strategy is significant because it is Google's first ever TV ad although the scale of the campaign is unlikely to be great. Google labelled the move 'experimental'.

While Google is by far the most dominant search engine, it ranks fifth in usage of web brosers, behind Safari, Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Chrome has gained a 1.42 per cent market share while Safari has 8.2 per cent, Firefox enjoys 22.5 per cent while Internet Explorer is used by two of every three people who use browsers, according to Net Applications.
