Game of the week: Bloxorz

LONDON - Jim McNiven, managing director of Kerb and Revolution's gaming expert had to look up YouTube to complete this mind bending game, as did 349,999 others. How will you fare in Revolution's Game of the week?

Like a lot of generation X, I like my entertainment vacuous and expect to get the maximum reward for the minimum effort.  It would be perfectly fair to say that I prefer snowboarding and first person shooters over skiing and sudoku. I've never see the appeal of playing brain trainers on a device when I could be playing cute Japanese imports where bizarre special effects appear to take precedence over any kind of logic or strategy.

Most puzzle games tend to be pretty dry and can be spotted a mile off and easily avoided. But every now and again, a game will fly under the radar and before you know it you are accidentally using your brain. In downtime.

This game of the week is exactly this sort of game. The difficulty level is set so low to begin with that you could easily believe that you are just noodling around. But the level is ratcheted up very gently until, like the proverbial frog in a pan of boiling water, you only realise you are doomed when it is too late.

When the game gets too infuriatingly hard and a level finally beats you, you cannot let go and find yourself scouring YouTube for one of many videos showing you how to complete it. As a rule of thumb, if you build a game that has 350,000 viewers on YouTube desperately watching a video of how to beat just one of the 33 levels then you know you have created a decent game.

Bloxorz has been around for a while but if you've not played it then you might want to crank up your brain and see if you can avoid becoming viewer number 350,001.
