Through film download website FilmOn, new technology has been established which overcomes many of the inherent problems that have hampered high definition film and television streaming in the past, usually due to their large file size.
Using a number of web-based computers, FilmOn streams high definition programming over a broadband connection without buffering or lag, by shrinking files down to a manageable size.
Today the company will launch its "virtual cable television" service, which will stream high-quality television feeds between the UK and US. These can be watched on a computer, television or mobile phone.FilmOn also offers free downloads and streams for select films, as well as paid downloads for about £3.99 for a 24-hour period, much like a video rental service.
For £5, users can download a film to transfer to a DVD.
As the service grows, analysts predict that it could challenge traditional movie rental shops as customers will be able to get the same quality video without leaving the house.
The company is said to be in talks with BT to expand the service in the UK. FilmOn also has plans to offer set-top boxes so the service can be accessed through televisions.
