Facebook submits third generation iPhone app

LONDON - Facebook has submitted its newest iPhone application to Apple's App Store for approval, which features improved functionality from Facebook's main website.

Facebook 3.0 for the iPhone features a new homescreen, which allows for customisation so users can write and read notes, upload and view videos and photos, RSVP for events.

Users can also search through pages, call people straight from their friends page and use the "like" feature on the updated news feed -- all features that were not available with the second version of the Facebook app.

Joe Hewitt, the Facebook engineer who developed the app, said that version 3.1 is already in the works, and can expect to include "push" notification -- where the app tells users they have a new message or notification without having to log into the website first.

A "landscape" version of the app is also due to be included in 3.1.

Apple is currently reviewing the app for approval. Facebook said it was working on a new app for Android-based phones as well.
