Extreme sports TV channel launches on the internet

LONDON - Fans of extreme and adventure sports have got their own television station with the launch of High.tv, which claims to be the first internet TV station with scheduled programming.

, which is being funded through advertising and sponsorship, is running three minute-long broadcasts of footage of air, sea and mountain sports, which is packaged up and scheduled on the channel.

The channel will be available to sports fans worldwide, but is targeted mainly at internet users with access to broadband internet connections.

A large element of the content will include live coverage including the PWA Windsurf Tour, the World Mountain Bike Tour and the World Mountaineering championships.

Iolo Jones, a High.tv director, said: "High.tv will bring outdoor and adventure sports that have largely been neglected by the mainstream sporting channels to a mass audience."

He added: "Using the latest technology we can deliver live pictures from practically anywhere on earth to a global audience. But what really sets us apart is the quality of our delivery on broadband internet."

High.tv was soft launched in April and has already attracted more than 1,000 users a day from 70 countries. The majority of its audience is logging on from the US, Europe, Japan and Australia, while it is also picking up visitors from the Netherlands, Antilles, French Polynesia and the Seychelles.

The company provides an alert system, which lets viewers know about events that are unexpectedly taking place because they are dependent on certain weather conditions. It currently developing an SMS alert system for users.
