Event TV: London Technology Week launches today

The debut London Technology Week begins today (16 June), kicking off five days of 200 independently-run events from technology companies from around the world.

The launch, which is taking place this morning at Central Woking, will see Mayor of London Boris Johnson partner with former Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg at the Bloomberg Tech Summit, a private event organised by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

They will be joined by important members of the technology community at the launch, including Sir Michael Moritz, chair of venture capitalist firm Sequoia Capital, Joanna Shields, UK chair of London technology business network Tech City, Kathryn Parsons, co-founder of educational tech programme Decoded, and Sebastian Siemiatkowski, chief executive of online payments system Klarna.

Johnson said: "Tech Week is a superb opportunity to hail the success of London’s tech sector, which despite only being in adolescence already makes a tremendous contribution to our economy and is outperforming our rivals around the globe.

"The tentacles of our digital army now spread to every corner of the capital and far beyond. We forecast that they will generate a whopping £12bn of economic activity and 46,000 new jobs in the capital over the next decade."

Shields added: "London is a digital powerhouse. In recent years the tech sector has played a crucial role leading economic recovery, accounting for 27% of new job creation. We are producing world-leading digital businesses, which in turn are fuelling wealth creation and employment.

"London is one of the fastest growing tech hubs and is proving its credentials as the location of choice for entrepreneurs to start and scale a successful digital business."

Keynote speakers at the event include Michael Birch, co-founder of social media platform Bebo, Simon Breakwell, co-founder of travel website Expedia, and co-founder of venture capital fund PRO Founders Capital, Brent Hoberman.

London Technology Week has been organised by UBM Live, in association with the Mayor’s official promotional organisation for the capital, London & Partners, Tech London Advocates and exhibition venue Excel London. Events will take place throughout the city across the five days.
