Event TV: Confused.com launches Brian the Robot into space

Confused.com has launched its Brian the Robot mascot 35,200 metres into space, in a PR stunt designed to celebrate the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong.

The price comparison website released a video of the mission on YouTube on Monday (24 August). The summer month was chosen to mark the anniversary of both his birth in 1930 and death in 2012.

The brand worked with high-altitude ballooning expert David Akerman to send the lovable Brian 35,200 metres into space from a base in Ross-on-Why. He was harnessed into a specially-designed hydrogen weather balloon and ascended at a rate of 5.5 metres per second.

Once the robot had reached the stratosphere after a 1.5-hour journey, he fell back to earth. GPS tracking led the Confused.com team to pick up the mascot near Uttoxeter in Staffordshire.

Laura Buchan, head of PR at Confused.com, said: "Brian has travelled all over the UK, and it had always been a dream of ours to send him into space.

"Brian the Robot is an iconic figure who is really popular with adults, children and extra-terrestrials alike. It was a brilliant project to be a part of and it’s fantastic that Brian is the first price comparison robot to reach space."

Brian in Space follows in July, which saw the brand launch a crate of beer 37,430 metres into the atmosphere.
