The projection stunt was commissioned by the TV channel to celebrate Russell T Davies’ new trio of shows: Cucumber, Banana and Tofu. The rainbow was chosen to represent the shows’ theme of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life.

The installation was created by public arts group Greyworld. Measuring 30 metres wide and 15 metres high, the rainbow came to life through lighting up the spray from the square’s famous water fountain.

Andrew Shoben, founder of Greyworld, told Event: "We were delighted to be able to create the Night Rainbow - it's been a project we have wanted to realise for some time. Channel 4 were the perfect partner, and much fun was had.

Greyworld previously used the setting of Trafalgar Square to launch a huge. Most recently, the collective worked with Fuse Sport & Entertainment and OMD UK to for Debenhams and Chloe Parfum on Oxford Street.
