After the deal is completed Disney will own the rights to 5,000 Marvel characters including Spider-Man, X-Men and Iron Man.

Disney will benefit from any movie or a game based on the Marvel characters and hopes to extend its reach to a young male audience.

Ike Perlmutter, Marvel's chief executive officer, said in a statement that ‘Disney is the perfect home for Marvel's fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses.'

Marvel celebrates its 70th anniversary this year and is expected to be left largely intact. When Disney bought animation studio Pixar in 2006 it left the company whole under the Pixar brand name.
