Hit40UK said the decision to scrap CD sales figures follows current music purchasing trends, claiming 96% of all music sales are now purchased online through websites such as Apple iTunes, Amazon's music store or 7Digital.
The programme, with over 1.9m listeners, previously presented its top 40 chart as a mixture of CD sales, airplay and download figures.
Paul Jackson, group programme director, Hit40UK said: "Downloads have now become the driving force for record sales, as the statistics clearly show.
"It makes complete sense that the UK's most listened to chart show reflects the changes in how people are listening to music.
"We constantly look to innovate and sit at the cutting edge of music taste and trends."
This week at the annual Macworld conference, Apple revealed that 6bn songs had been purchased through its iTunes online store since its launch.
