Desert Island Brands - Stuart Hepburn

A chance to pick five brands that you would like to find washed up on the beach if you were a castaway. What would you choose and why? design consultancy Pemberton & Whitefoord asks Stuart Hepburn, marketing director at Eircom and recently appointed non-executive chairman of SiebertHead.

1. Survival essential

Making a shelter, finding food and attempting to escape are going to be high on your agenda -- so which brand will you find most useful in your attempt to tame the great outdoors?

It would have to be the boringly obvious but beautifully designed Swiss Army knife. The essential all-in-one tool kit that I am sadly prevented from carrying in my hand luggage nowadays as I travel. Is that funny little blade really for taking stones out of horses' hooves?

2. Last taste of civilisation

The island has a plentiful supply of nuts and fruit, not to mention a healthy population of fish, so you will have plenty to eat. But which one food brand are you really going to miss from your old life?

MacSweens Haggis! A taste of the old country, hoping the island can also supply neeps and tatties! I remember tasking a production assistant in Los Angeles to source some haggis for a dinner there in connection with a commercial shoot -- only to be told later that it's import had been banned by the FDA.

3. Best reminder of home

Successful survivalists always claim that it is mental attitude which sees them through. Belief that you will get back home is going to be vital -- so which brand will sum up home best?

This might be cheating -- but if I could take my Compaq iPAQ, the memory is stuffed with photos and sound-clips from my two sons. It also has a couple of mindless games to keep me amused. I don't suppose the island has wi-fi by any chance?

4. Most welcome online brand

Eventually you manage to rig up your own connection to the internet using bits and pieces found on the beach but you have only one chance to log on to a website before it goes down -- which online brand will you choose?

I'd have to check out my Hotmail for lots of exciting US stock tips and offers for herbal Viagra.

5. Ultimate luxury

Self indulgence is hard to come by on a desert island, so what brand would you be most excited to find washed up on the beach?

Only one brand? If only Glenmorangie and Marlboro could establish a joint venture, I'd be laughing. I'll have to plump for Glenmorangie I guess as it stands up better to getting wet on the beach.

6. Transferable skills

You already work in the jungle of marketing so there are probably skills which you have acquired through your job which will come in handy -- or you may have other hidden talents. Which of your personal skills will help you to get to grips with life on a desert island?

Having trained as a navigator in the Royal Naval Reserves a long time ago, I could use some of my residual navigating knowledge to work out how to get home.

Adrian Whitefoord, founding partner of Pemberton & Whitefoord, comments: It is unlikely that there will be any equine species on the island so the horse hoof tool can be saved for punching holes in coconuts. With a bit of luck the fish disgorger blade could fulfil its ultimate destiny for the first time. I am afraid I can't share Stuart's love of haggis. Even though my family origins are Scottish I find haggis just slightly less palatable than a plate of grilled toenail clippings. What's all this talk of digital images, lap tops, wi-fi and Hotmail? This is the time to think low tech. The family album for nostalgia and a couple of drums for communication would serve just as well. I am relieved Stuart plumped for the Glenmorangie over the Marlboro. It's so much less effective dispatching a message in a fag packet. Stuart's navigational prowess would undoubtedly be a bonus but I don't think he should be too hasty in returning to Blighty - Tony B looks like he's is going to make Marlboro's redundant here too.
