The magazine will launch in the autumn, although further details on how the title will be positioned is being kept under wraps.
However, it is expected the title will target the general car market and is will sit between Dennis's existing motoring titles, Auto Express and Evo.
It is also likely to compete against Emap's market leading Max Power and Haymarket's What Car?.
Askew started his career at Motoring News before editing Link House's Mini World magazine. After three years there he moved to Complete Car and then to Auto Express as road test editor. Having developed the testing content of the magazine, Askew was promoted to became associate editor of the title.
Last week, it was announced that DFGW had picked up the 拢5m advertising brief for the new monthly motoring title.
DFGW scooped the business after a pitch against boymeetsgirl S&J and River Communications. It will work on the launch with BLM Media, with a PR agency due to be appointed shortly.
Phil Parker, group publishing director at Dennis, said: "We have very ambitious targets for the launch of Project Squirrel."
In the last round of ABC results, circulations in the sector were up 2% year on year with Dennis's Auto Express and Evo achieving 4.4% and 10% increases respectively.
