The documentary, which examined the matrimonial traditions of Britain's traveller community by following the weddings of 22-year-old Joan and 16-year-old Bridget, was the highest rating edition of 'Cutting Edge' since 1996 and beat the average ratings of 'Celebrity Big Brother's recent run.

Airing at 9pm-10pm, it came in 700,000 viewers ahead of ITV1 and BBC One, which both managed 3.8 million viewers.

Including the contribution of Channel 4+1, the programme pulled in a total of 5.2 million viewers.

BBC One launched a new series of 'MasterChef', the popular culinary competition which was previously shown on BBC Two, at 8.30pm-10pm.

While the last series bowed out with 5.2 million viewers, this 22-part series started with more of a whimper, giving BBC One a 14.4% share.

While ITV1 showed 'The Bill', Five offered Liverpool's first Europa League fixture and managed 2.2 million viewers, peaking at 3.1 million.

BBC Two attracted 2.4 million viewers with its 'Mock The Week' comedy panel show at 9pm-9.30pm.
