The broadcaster has warned that the platform is still in its experimental stage, but Test Tube Telly essentially allows users watch, discuss and rate on-demand TV programmes through their Facebook profiles.
The initiative is the first from a broadcaster to use Facebook Connect, which allows users to sign into affiliate sites using their Facebook IDs.
Channel 4 plans on branching out the service to other social networks soon, including Twitter, and said it could become fully integrated into its main website if it is successful.
Andy Pipes, Channel 4 product development manager, said the platform emerged after the broadcaster began adding thousands of programmes from the C4 archives onto channel4.com, with no simple way for users to find new shows they might enjoy.
Pipes said: "On linear TV, people often hear about new programmes from friends or colleagues. If a friend recommends a show, we're often motivated to check it out the next time it's on. So we thought we'd see if we could use the same 'friend recommendation' thinking to help people find and watch otherwise hidden gems within 4oD."
The site is available for UK users only and will stay live until the end of September, after which Channel 4 will plan to expand or scrap the platform.
