According to a report in The Times, any tie-up would help the broadcasters to better compete with ITV. A merger of the two ad teams would see the number of staff reduced by up to 50%, claim reports.

A merger between Channel 4's digital channels and the BBC's Worldwide has already been mooted, with the potential to create a publicly-owned business with an annual turnover of £800m.

Broadcasters are waiting for the publication of next month's Digital Britain white paper, which will set a template for the future of the UK's broadcasters.
