Celebrity Big Brother nominated for Bafta by television viewers

LONDON - ‘Celebrity Big Brother 4', which was won by non-celebrity Chantelle Houghton, has been nominated for the Pioneer Audience Award by television viewers at this year's Bafta Awards.

Members of the public have been voting for their favourite programmes since January, and will be able to pick the winner at the website.

Also on the shortlist are 'The Royle Family', 'Dragons Den', 'The Vicar of Dibley Christmas special', 'Planet Earth' and 'Life on Mars'.

More than 7m people tuned in to watch the former promotions girl from Essex claim the top prize in 2006's ‘Celebrity Big Brother'. Since winning the programme Houghton has tried her hand at television presenting and has become a celebrity magazine mainstay. She has also married her housemate, The Ordinary Boys lead singer Preston.

The programme also made a star of George Galloway -- famous for the cat episode where he could be seen purring and drinking milk from Rula Lenska's hand.

The nominated series of ‘Celebrity Big Brother' pulled in an average audience of 4.5m an episode and an average 19% share of available audience, up 11% on the 2005 offering.

The most recent series, won by Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, topped 7.1m at the beginning of the series but fell to an average 5m viewers during its run.

A racism row over Shetty's treatment in the house broke out and caused a record number of complaints to television watchdog Ofcom.

The Bafta TV awards take place at the London Palladium on May 20.
