A BT advertisement claimed that NTL had increased its monthly line rental from £9.99 to £14.99 and had raised its call connection fee from 3.5p to 4.9p. It also pointed out that free unlimited local phone calls could only be made between NTL customers only.
NTL argued that the ad was misleading because it compared BT's telephone package with its telephone and entertainment package, which also includes internet and television services. Although this fact was printed in a footnote to the ad, the Advertising Standards Authority concluded that the print was not clear enough.
BT explained that industry regulations stopped them from combining telephone and entertainment services in one package. It also said that its discounts made its telephone-only package worthwhile.
