Next year the capital will welcome a number of new and returning major events, which should ensure the industry benefits from the Olympic legacy.

Johnson said: "London is still buzzing from the extraordinary positive contagion which spread through the capital during the 2012 Games, and I am determined to use the fantastic summer as a springboard for the future.

"We have already lined up an exciting calendar of cultural and sporting spectaculars for the coming months, which will cement London's reputation as the best big city in the world in which to host major events."

Iain Edmondson, head of major events at London & Partners, said: "It’s hard to top the most incredible summer of sport that London has ever seen, but as a result of its resounding success we have a population of passionate and informed event goers wanting to get involved.

"With the diverse array of events already lined up for London fans and event enthusiasts have everything to look forward to as the capital continues to sparkle on the world stage."

A new highlight for the 2013 is a mass participation . With the event on the scale of the London Marathon it is predicted to be the largest cycling fundraising event in the world.

For those desperate to see more major sporting events this year there is also the NFL Series International at Wembley Stadium in October and the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena.

Next year will also see the return of Six Nations Rugby, the Uefa Champions League Final and the ITU Triathlon World Series Grand Final in September.
