According to Gibb, the remaining support from the caravan industry was withdrawn in October, making Boat and Caravan 2012 unviable and prompting his decision to leave Ocean.
Gibb said: "The two went hand-in-hand, once I knew the show wasn’t happening and Melville were interested."
He told Event issues with caravan manufacturers became apparent from the start of his tenure. "My first day on the job was the opening day of the 2010 Boat and Caravan Show. On day two I had meetings with the manufacturers and could tell there and then that there were issues that needed resolving. They wanted to own and run the shows. But the relationship was a normal exhibitor-organiser one until October 2010 when they announced the launch of National Caravan Council Events. Then the relationship shifted to a competitive one."
Gibb said he is working his six month notice at Ocean and a start date hasn’t been set for his new job at Melville. He said he is excited to begin: "It might surprise people but I miss the contractor side of things. It must be my calling."
Event contacted Ocean Media but they were unable to comment by press time.
