This morning (10 December) a troupe of aspiring Billy Elliots from across the county joined the star of the musical version Rhys Yeomans to submit the bid in London.
Councillor Simon Henig, leader of Durham City Council, said: "This huge groundswell of support is absolutely terrific. To have so many people from all over Durham, the region and across the UK behind us is a measure of just how much our bid means to everyone."
Durham's support recently soared over the 27,000 mark. However, the City faces competition from 22 areas including Birmingham, Lancaster, Southend-on-sea, Swansea Bay and Aberdeen.
Birmingham reportedly expects a £200 million boost to the local economy expected if it is successful.
