The new version, which has been released by Universal Music, has shot to the top of the Official UK Download Chart within just hours of its release, knocking James Blunt down to number two with his number one single 'You're beautiful'.
The track, which was the title track of the Beatles 1967 album, has also entered the Guinness Book of Records for being the quickest single put on sale -- it was available just 45 minutes after McCartney and Bono performed the song.
The production company 7 Digital, which created the download, received the audio from a runner who ran from the concert to St James's Square with a CD to be uploaded.
It was the first time that the former Beatle had played the song live without the other members of the band. The track starts with the line 'It was 20 years ago today...', which was seen as a fitting tribute to the Live Aid concert.
The track, the profits of which will be going towards Live 8, came out on Saturday and after just a few hours sales had already reached number six in the charts.
