Dubbed Open iPlayer and formerly known as Project Marquee, the initiative is aimed at allowing third parties to run their own version of the iPlayer. It marks the official launch of Marquee and is intended to encourage a publish-anywhere specification for the iPlayer.
Erik Huggers, the BBC's director of future media and technology, unveiled the plan at IBC 2009 in Amsterdam, the global TV technology conference.
Huggers reportedly told delegates that one of the most searched-for terms on the iPlayer was Coronation Street, the ITV soap opera.
"It is not a concept of aggregation, but federation," said Huggers.
The plan still requires BBC Trust approval, but if realised, it would form another plank in the BBC's partnership proposals, which are aimed at aiding the commercial media sector with BBC technology, content and know-how.
