Under a deal struck between the two broadcasters, Virgin Media's TV customers will be able to watch BBC programmes such as Robin Hood, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, and Later with Jools Holland, in HD on-demand through their iPlayer, if they have the correct set-top box and HD-ready TV.
Demand for the service has been strong, with more than 100 million views since BBC iPlayer launched on Virgin Media in May 2008, with nearly 15 million views in March alone.
Katharine Burn Rivington, executive director of content acquisition at Virgin Media, said over the next few months, the broadcaster would be increasing its line-up of broadcast HD channels.
Upcoming highlights from the BBC HD channel include the two remaining Doctor Who specials, the new series of Dragons' Den and the children's show, Kerwhizz.
