BBC One's Bafta broadcast brings in 4.3m viewers

LONDON - BBC One's live coverage of the Bafta television awards ceremony last night saw an average audience of 4.3m tuning in across the two-hour broadcast, hosted by comedian Graham Norton, almost 18% of the available audience.

According to unofficial overnight ratings figures, the Baftas broadcast was beaten in the 8pm to 9pm slot by ITV's 'Heartbeat', which drew in an average of 5.7m viewers.

However, ITV1's audience share dropped off for the 9pm episode of 'Hell's Kitchen', which scored an average of 3.6m.

When it came to winning Bafta awards, BBC was also ahead of ITV with seven awards for its programmes, including best comedy programme, for BBC One's 'Harry and Paul' and best drama series for 'Wallander'.

Channel 4 also scored seven gongs, including best sitcom, for 'The IT Crowd' and best current affairs, for the 'Dispatches' strand.

ITV's 'X Factor' won best entertainment show and Harry Hill won the award for best entertainment performer for the ITV1 show 'Harry Hill's TV Burp'.

It also won gongs for 'The Bill, 'News at Ten' and its coverage of the Brazilian F1 grand prix.
