BBC launches largest online drive to date for BBCNews.com

LONDON - The BBC is launching its largest online campaign yet to promote BBCNews.com, which will target consumers in Western Europe and the US over the next six months.

The campaign, created by Agency Republic, uses the strapline "News for a non-stop world".

The campaign uses an innovative approach to creative and media by targeting consumers through their relationships with messenger services and interactive live feeds direct from the BBC's .

This includes time-specific media to reach viewers during mid-morning and lunchtime periods at work to increase the efficiency of the campaign.

In the event of a major international news story breaking, the campaign has been designed to boost its advertising. Agency Republic created a "News Flash Module" that allows the BBC to instantly update advertising creative with bespoke messaging and imagery.

The BBC, which already attracts more than 50% of its international audience from the US and a significant proportion from Western Europe, said there was a massive demand for international news that it wants to tap into.

Gavin Marshall, BBC business director at Agency Republic, said: "This is by far the most innovative campaign that we have ever run for the BBCNews.com site. The rich interactivity of the creative, the innovation in media and partnerships and the definitive measurement solution will make sure that this campaign sets a new global standard in effective online advertising."

The campaign was launched after BBC-commissioned research revealed that aimless surfing is a thing of the past and people go online for a purpose.

Alan Booth, controller of marketing at the BBC, said: "People go online for a purpose -- they are inquisitive to find information, learn about the latest news or catch up on a story.

"They are grabbing time at work. In some ways, people access online news sites instead of having a cigarette. And this must be much healthier."
