In the BBC's statement on programme policy published today, the corporation pledged to premiere at least 20 new films and 30 new documentaries on BBC Four and make drama and comedy its top priority for BBC One, as it sinks an extra £61m in total for the year into television, radio and digital.
Mark Thompson, director-general of the BBC, said: "This money will be spent on enriching the summer schedule and increasing the amount of drama and comedy."
All of the 26 BBC services across radio, television and digital have been provided with governors' statements to provide a blueprint on how they will live up to their public service obligations.
BBC Radio One will broadcast from 25 major live events a year, as well as ensuring 40% of its mainstream output will come from UK acts.
BBC Two will provide more Westminster coverage and will broadcast extended editions of 'Newsnight' while BBC News will be given an additional £11m for coverage of the upcoming general election.
In addition, the BBC pledged to make savings of £105m in 2005/2006 towards the target of annual savings of £355m by 2008 as part of implementing the Building Public Service review.
