The private equity firm joins a number of other companies thought to be interested in the Reed assets, including a joint bid from European private equity firms Candover and Cinven, US private equity company TPG, US publishing firm McGraw Hill, and US private equity firm Permira.

The Anglo-Dutch publisher, whose titles include New Scientist, Estates Gazette and Variety, put its business information division up for sale in February.

Reed Elsevier is looking to offload the division, which is valued at between £1bn and £1.25bn, in an effort to reduce its dependence on advertising revenue.
