Gruner & Jahr eyes Reed Elsevier trade magazine arm bid

LONDON - Gruner & Jahr, the German publisher, is considering making a bid for the trade magazine unit of Reed Elsevier, according to a newspaper report in Germany.

The Anglo-Dutch publisher, whose titles include New Scientist, Estates Gazette and Variety, put its business information division up for sale in February this year.

According to a report in Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Gruner & Jahr, which is a unit of German group Bertelsmann, confirmed its interest.

Reed Elsevier is looking to offload the division in an effort to reduce its dependence on advertising revenue.

It is thought that a number of companies are also interested in the assets, including European private equity firms Candover and Cinven in a joint bid; US private equity company TPG; and US publishing firm McGraw Hill.

The business is valued at between £1bn and £1.25bn.
