AOL ringfences $50m for hundreds more local sites

AOL is building on its local news offering with plans to invest $50m in hundreds of new local websites this year.

As many as 500 new sites could be added to Patch, which was acquired by AOL last year, Reuters reports. Patch specialises in developing local sites in the US. AOL has already launched 100 local news sites.

AOL's chief executive, Tim Armstrong, is driving the strategy of developing more local content, believing it is the future of the web. AOL needs to revive its fortunes, having at one time been the biggest ISP in the US, during the early dial-up days of the web.

AOL merged with Time Warner in 2000, in one of the biggest deals in US corporate history. The company’s stock plummeted and the merger was widely considered to be a disaster. Time Warner eventually hived off AOL last year.

As part of its turnaround strategy, AOL has been . Bebo was reportedly sold for $10m, with AOL having paid in the region of $850m for the site only two years earlier.
