AOL to offer free back catalogue music videos in deal with record labels

NEW YORK - America Online is to expand its music offering by making old music videos available to visitors for free, after signing a deal with Universal Music and Warner Music.

The ISP has previously offered current music videos, but is now to offer a back catalogue of thousands of clips. Along with the Universal and Warner deals, AOL is in talks with other labels, according to reports.

The videos are being coded and will be hosted at . Universal Music's artists include Eminem and U2.

AOL will make money from this site through advertising, mostly on banners and in-stream messages. Users will be able to download the videos to make their own programmes, and AOL will run different channels on the site for different artists.

Doug Morris, chairman and CEO of Universal Music, said: "It is clear that there is huge consumer demand for music video-on-demand products, and we are committed to delivering our artists' videos and music to fans in as many new and innovative ways as possible."

Separately, AOL is being sued by a 19-year-old girl called Lesli Reed-Brennan in the US, who claims that an AOL chatroom monitor seduced her when she was 15 years old, persuading her to send naked photographs of herself. The chatroom supervisor Matthew Wright was fired in 2003, after AOL found out about the relationship. Reed-Brennan is claiming damages of $25,000 (拢13,100).
