Anna Kournikova tops list of tennis player fan sites

LONDON - Anna Kournikova may not win much and she isn't playing at Wimbledon this year, but she still has more fan sites dedicated to her than any other tennis player.

According to NetNames, the Russian tennis star, who is better known for modelling assignments than her backhand, has more than 80 websites dedicated to her.

They include the official site where visitors can read Anna's journal: "I'm just devastated not to be able to play -- especially in England and especially on grass, which are my favourites. I arrived in London last Thursday and was practicing two times a day at the Roehampton Club and went to Birmingham yesterday by car from London. I practiced [sic] yesterday on site and again today and had to be heavily taped by the trainer for my practice."

Others sites dedicated to the Russian include lots of sites with titles such as Sexy Anna Kournikova and the more sedate . She has a little extra help from the fact that a computer virus is also named after her.

Behind Kournikova are Venus Williams with 28 sites dedicated to her, followed by her sister Serena Williams who has 19 sites; the Serbian/Australian Jelena Dokic has 14 sites and Daniela Hantuchova 11.

When it comes to men's tennis websites, newcomer Andy Roddick tops the men's website rankings following his victory at Queens in the run-up to Wimbledon.

The UK's number one Tim Henman is not far behind with 14 sites, compared with Roddick's 16. Henman might not be able to beat Pete Sampras on the court, but at least he outguns him on the web. Sampras has just 10 sites dedicated to him, followed by Lleyton Hewitt, who was ousted from the tournament yesterday, and Andre Agassi, who have nine each.

One site dedicated to the American Sampras is from Australia and claims an Aussie dog bears a striking resemblance to the US tennis star. Check it out for yourself .

The growth in the number of sites dedicated to tennis stars is a sign, according to Jonathan Robinson, director of business development at NetNames, of the global brands with huge marketing potential the players have become.

"Although there will always be domain name speculators out there trying to capitalise on well-known companies and celebrities, what was particularly surprising from our research was that so few tennis players or their agents have made any effort to protect their online brand.

"Many players have left themselves open to cybersquatting by failing to register common variations of domains based on their name such as .co.uk. This could prove to be particularly damaging when trying to retain control of a player’s reputation online," he said.
