Al Gore's Current TV invites viewers to contribute news

LONDON - Current TV, the television network co-founded by Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore, is inviting web users to submit video and commentary to create TV news.

Launched two years ago, Current TV already lets professional videographers submit video news segments.

The network has redesigned its website, , so that users can create and vote for the news and information that is relevant to them.

The company has encouraged users to create postings on topics, and then upload photos, animation, embedded YouTube videos, cartoons, text comments and webcam responses.

Current TV's programming consists of short video programs, typically under 15 minutes in length, and a survey of its users found that 70% watch them while multi-tasking on a computer simultaneously.

Joel Hyatt, the chief executive of Current TV who co-founded the company with Gore, said: "This is a new form of media to create and engage with and influence the news and information that our users and our friends receive."

Current TV's network programming runs on cable and satellite broadcasters in select US markets, the UK and Ireland.

Its audience remains too small for Nielsen ratings but Current TV claims to have the highest percentage of viewers in the much-sought-after 18- to 34-year-old demographic of any television channel.

Last month, the network won the first Emmy award for interactive television.
