The venue teamed up with Liverpool City Council and The Mersey Partnership for the bid, which will see the event come to Liverpool for the first time.

The four-day conference is taking place in September and will utilise both the BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena.

More than 20,000 delegates and visitors are expected to attend, generating tens of millions of pounds for Liverpool's economy.

"The news that one of the UK's main political parties has chosen ACC Liverpool for its biggest annual gathering is a major coup for the city, and confirms our standing as a major player in the meetings industry," said BT Convention Centre general manager Jacquie Rogers.

This year's Labour Party Conference will take place in Brighton, with 2010's event being held in Manchester.
