Young customer base helps Asos doubles Christmas sales

LONDON - Asos more than doubled its sales over the Christmas period as its young customer base proved more resilient to the economic downturn.

The online fashion retailer reported a 118% increase in year-on-year sales for the nine  weeks to 16 January 2009 and that it expected to be in line with profit expectations for the financial year.

It has benefited from the continued growth in online shopping and its young customer base, half of which is under the age of 25 and less affected by rising bills and mortgages.

Asos' chief executive Nick Robertson said that free delivery weekends and product promotions had helped drive its Christmas sales.

In 2008 the company launched AsosRed, a discounted designer clearance range and a maternity range. This year it intends to introduce more designer brands and children's clothing to the site.
