Yahoo! poaches Latitude's Brocklehurst

LONDON - Yahoo! UK & Ireland has poached Latitude's Matt Brocklehurst to become head of strategic marketing at the internet giant.

Brocklehurst, who was previously head of marketing at Latitude, will work with Yahoo!'s business-to-business marketing teams in the UK, France, Italy, Spain and Germany to develop a consistent brand positioning and promotional strategy for the company.

The move is intended to help Yahoo! compete more effectively against Google, which has an 87.3% share of the UK search market. Yahoo! has a 4% share of UK searches, compared to 3.72% for MSN and 3.07% for Ask UK, according to figures from Hitwise.

Brocklehurst spent two years at Latitude, where he was responsible for delivering marketing strategies and generating new business for the search company. He has more than 17 years' experience of strategic and global marketing, having previously been global marketing manager of Thomson Scientific, a business information provider.

Separately, a senior Yahoo! executive has reportedly accused Microsoft of teaming up with activist investor Carl Icahn to force a "fire sale" price for Yahoo's search business.
