Coppel, who oversees the UK & Ireland as well as Canada in his role as European managing director, is to be replaced by Rich Riley, a Yahoo! veteran of 10 years, when he leaves in Q1 2009.
Coppel became managing director of Yahoo! Europe in June 2008 after six years in senior management positions in the US. He came on board with Terry Semel, the former chairman and chief executive of Yahoo!.
Riley joined Yahoo! Nearly ten years ago after Yahoo! Acquired Log-me-on.com, the company he founded. Riley is currently responsible for Yahoo!'s Advertiser and Publisher Group in Europe and will become senior vice-president of Yahoo! Europe in Canada on Coppel's departure.
Yahoo! president Sue Decker said that the appointment of Riley represents the next phase in the evolution of the company's European and Canadian business.
Coppel's departure follows news that Jerry Yang will step down as Yahoo! chief executive.
