Yahoo! chief wants 'boatloads of money' for search deal

NEW YORK - Yahoo! chief executive Carol Bartz has revealed that the internet firm is still talking to software giant Microsoft about a partnership around search, but stressed she would hold out for a good deal.

Speaking at the All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad California yesterday, Bartz said any deal allowing another company access to its search assets would have to meet a specific set of criteria for Yahoo!.

"If there's a boatload of money and there's the right technology involved, would we do a deal? Sure.

"But you know there're two parties in all of this so the other party has to have a boatload of money. It's that simple."

Bartz replaced Jerry Yang as chief executive of Yahoo! in January this year. In 2008 Yang rejected a $47.5bn takeover bid from Microsoft, which was keen to bolster its online resources in order to compete with Google, the king of search.

Yahoo! is the number two internet search engine in the US with around 20% of the market.

Asked if the talks between Yahoo! and Microsoft about an internet search deal were continuing, Bartz replied "a little bit".

The launch will be backed by a $100m ad campaign.
