Xfm's Euro song is bookies' favourite for number one

LONDON - 'Born in England', the Euro 2004 theme song from the Xfm breakfast show-created band Twisted X, featuring members of The Libertines and Supergrass, is the bookmakers' favourite to take the number one spot.

A Ladbrokes spokesman said that the odds had been slashed from 2/1 to even money, putting it as firm favourite ahead of rival, the Football Association-backed 'Altogether Now', a reworking by the Liverpool band The Farm of the 1990s floorfiller.

The spokesman said: "We've been forced to slash the odds... after punters poured in to back if for number one. Bookmakers are sure that The Farm will not be number next Sunday [June 13] but as momentum for Euro 2004 picks up, support may pick up too."

'Altogether Now', which was first released in 1990, is 3/1 to reach the top slot next Sunday, but 1/2 to take the number one position at some point during or after the tournament. The latest version has been remixed by DJ Spoony and features vocals from the St Francis Xavier Boys Choir.

'Born in England' has been released in support of charity Help a Local Child.

The song, written by Xfm listeners the Wheatleys, was chosen through a public vote after a competition launched by breakfast show presenter Christian O'Connell.

The track also features 500 Xfm listeners who won the chance to take part. Meanwhile TalkSPORT is also to launch its own single for the tournament, 'Come on England' featuring the station's presenters and a group of England fans.

It is the second time the Xfm breakfast team have done a football song. In 2002 they did 'Lager Frenzy' for the 2002 World Cup, to the tune of Primal Scream's 'Rocks'.
