Xbox continues expansion into home entertainment with NBC Universal deal

LONDON - The Xbox 360 games console has expanded its film hosting service in a deal with NBC Universal covering films such as 'The Bourne Supremacy' and 'Shaun of the Dead'.

Xbox owners will be able to download an initial range of 30 Universal titles and watch them in high definition on their television sets.

NBC Universal is the latest studio to sign with Microsoft after Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros agreed to similar tie-ins.

Additional Xbox content was also announced yesterday. Extra game play will be added to a range of existing games, including popular social games like 'Lips' and 'Guitar Hero World Tour'.

There are also plans to launch a new interactive television quiz show game called '1 vs. 100', where users will be able to compete against each other to win real prizes.

The proposed additions to the Xbox Live package form part of a strategic plan to broaden the brand's appeal through increased expansion into the entertainment sector.

Neil Thompson, head of Xbox UK, said that he hopes these latest offering will help to seal the brand's position "as a major player in the mainstream home entertainment space".

The brand has confirmed that it will continue to target its core group of committed gamers. However, increasingly it wishes to cater for a range of needs in the modern digital living room.

Thompson told Brand Republic: "We are constantly developing our entertainment services. Of course we are still committed to the core and very active gaming market. However, we have to look at other ways to evolve, connect and broaden our appeal. What we are looking to provide is a ubiquitous service whereby people can satisfy a range of needs through their Xbox."

Microsoft confirmed that the Xbox 360 will continue to expand in the coming months. The ultimate vision is for Xbox's services to become mobile so that users can access them wherever they are.
