X Factor pulls in 12.6m as Jedward's luck finally runs out

LONDON - An audience of 12.6 million, peaking at 14.4 million, tuned in to ITV1's 'The X Factor' on Saturday as Irish twins John and Edward finally saw their luck run out to be voted off the show last night.

The figure of 14.4 million is a new record for this series of 'The X Factor' on ITV1, up on last week's peak figure of 14.1 million. On average, Saturday's show, running between 8pm and 9.20pm, was watched by 47% of the available audience.

Competitors this week were required to sing songs by Wham! and George Michael and on the results show on Sunday night John and Edward found themselves in the bottom two along with Olly Murs.

Judges Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell elected to save Murs, while Jedward's mentor Louis Walsh saved his own act. Given the casting vote, Dannii Minogue asked "Is this a singing competition?" before saving Murs, meaning that John & Edward are finally out.

Back on Saturday night, BBC One's 'Strictly Come Dancing' was watched by an average of 8.9 million people, meaning that 35% of the available audience tuned in. Ricky Groves, who is best known for playing the character of Gary on 'EastEnders' was voted off by judges after a dance-off against Laila Rouass.

The show, hosted by Bruce Forsyth, was only head to head with 'The X Factor' for 20 minutes, during which time 37% of the audience were tuned to 'The X Factor' and 30% to 'Strictly Come Dancing'.

ITV1 rounded off a strong ratings performance on Saturday with 'I'm A Celebrity' attracting an average of 9.9 million viewers, or 41% of the available audience. They tuned in to see Katie Price, otherwise known as Jordan, and celebrity cleaner Kim Woodburn munching their way through a variety of daunting delicacies including kangaroo anus and fish eyes.
