Wieden & Kennedy nominated 37 times for Cannes film

LONDON - Wieden & Kennedy's global network picked up 37 nominations at this year's Cannes International Advertising Festival Film awards, including one for the London office's acclaimed 'cog' spot, created for Honda.

W&K Portland alone garnered 14 nominations, for its work on Nike and the Coca-Cola brand PowerAde. Other offices to receive nominations were Amsterdam, for Coca-Cola and its Nike "stickman" work; New York, for its work on ESPN Sports Channel; and Tokyo, also for Nike.

Last year, W&K scooped the Grand Prix with its "tag" spot for Nike.

It is a strong performance from UK agencies, which have been listed 91 times after entering 378 ads. US agencies led the field with 164 nominations, after entering 1,047 pieces of work.

Bartle Bogle Hegarty led the way for UK agencies with 13 nominations across a number of clients, including the charity Barnardo's and Johnnie Walker, with the "fish" spot, which is tipped as a contender for the Grand Prix.

Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO was nominated for nine ads, including the controversial "dog breath" spot for Wrigleys Xcite, which shows a man regurgitating a dog; and for Wrangler's "cafe", which shows a slow-motion pretend shoot-out in a greasy spoon.

Clemmow Hornby Inge saw 10 of its ads nominated, including work for Heineken and Tango. Leo Burnett's work on McDonald's sponsorship saw it receive seven nominations.

As tipped, Lowe's "Devil's Island" spot received a nomination, one of seven garnered for the London office this year. Other British beer ads to be nominated include M&C Saatchi's Kronenbourg spot, speculating on the fate of Britain had Napoleon won at Waterloo.

Also in the running for Lions is TBWA\London's campaign for John Smith's starring the comedian Peter Kay. Some pundits were unsure if its British humour would translate to an international jury, but all five spots have been nominated -- including the one where Kay tells his daughter she should be worrying about burglars climbing in the window, not monsters.

Mother's work for Egg won three nominations; Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R London for Land Rover and Times Newspapers; and Saatchi & Saatchi for work on NSPCC, Monster.com and T-Mobile. BMP DDB received a total of five nominations, for Volkswagen and Nikon.

The jury is headed by Dan Wieden, chief creative officer and CEO of Wieden & Kennedy. From the UK, Richard Russell, a senior copywriter at W&K and Nicholas Bell, executive creative director at J Walter Thompson, also sat on the jury.

The awards will be handed out at a ceremony on Saturday night.
