LONDON - The wet July boosted sales of home-related products such as furniture, curtains and cushions, providing some cheer for high street retailers.

The value of UK retail sales rose by 1.8% in July on a like-for-like basis with total sales up 3.6%, according to figures from the British Retail Consortium.

An initial heatwave boost in sales of sandals, salads and DIY/gardening items gave way to floor covering and furniture as the rain showed no sign of abating. Sales of Wellingtons were also reported to have been ‘flying'.
